5D. Mood Disorders

Most researchers believe that chemical imbalances in the brain cause mood disorders. Proper treatment can help. Without treatment, people often experience job loss, substance abuse and marital breakups.

There are two categories of mood disorder:

Depression, which includes:

  • Major depression
  • Dysthymia (a chronic low-grade depression)

Bipolar Disorders which includes:

  • Cyclothymia (a less intensive form of bipolar disorder)
  • Intense mood swings between depression and mania

About 25% of women, and 17% of men will be diagnosed with a mood disorder at some point in their life. Depression is a more common diagnosis than bipolar disorder.
