5B. Common Disorders & Contributing Factors

Common Diagnoses

Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

ADHD involves distorted behavior or thought patterns like constant activity, fidgeting or inability to concentrate. Symptoms may include repetition of certain words or actions.

Depression

Depression is a mental disorder marked by mood distortions like anger, sadness, and despair.

Psychosis

Psychosis is a generic word that describes a loss of touch with reality. Many different conditions can influence it.

Remember, a diagnosis does not define a person. Avoid stigmatizing the person by using terms or phrases that characterize the person by what makes them different. Never call someone with a mental health issue crazy, nuts or psycho.
