3F. Grievances, Complaints, and Help

While your ward is in a facility, sometimes you may need to file a grievance or lodge a complaint.

Grievance

Related to a patient’s rights

Complaint

Related to anything other than a patient’s rights

When you disagree with the medical staff, it’s vital that you communicate with them. Oftentimes you can resolve those conflicts.

First, try having a conversation with the medical staff. It’s also wise to write a letter and keep a dated copy, just in case.

If a problem remains unresolved, you should consider asking for help through these agencies:

  • North Dakota Protection and Advocacy
  • Vulnerable Adult Protective Services, Division of Aging Services, North Dakota Department of Human Services
  • North Dakota Long-Term Care Ombudsman (for nursing home residents only)
  • Department of Health (for residential and hospital facilities)
  • Nonprofit family support organizations

You may also write to the court where the guardianship was established to request a hearing.
